We live and breathe music.

"She Covers The Sky" on AtmoWorks.com, September 25

Early in 2009, I had a recurring idea to make music that was dedicated to honoring the return to Earth of the divine feminine, or goddess energy. Female energy. When I have ideas that keep coming up over and over, as this one did, I never over-analyze them, as they find a way to come to life one way or another.

Central to the idea of the return of the divine feminine, is the idea that about 10,000 years ago (of course, this date varies, some say 5,000), there was a shift from matriarchal societies, to patriarchal societies. During this time, it's thought that we went from tribal, hunter/gatherer cultures that worshiped the moon (a common symbol for the feminine), to agrarian cultures that worshiped the sun. We shifted from an emphasis on Female Energy, characterized by receptivity, synergy, inward looking, nurturing, mystery, healing, compassion, and intuition, to Male Energy, characterized by action, outward looking, centralized power, intellect and force. Some say that this shift of emphasis was due to abuses of power during the more matriarchal period, but now the sacred feminine is returning to Earth—not to seize power once again, but to restore balance between the two energies, merging them, re-defining them, creating an entirely new set of possibilities. I find this idea fascinating, so I wanted to make music that helps to usher in this new phase, and express the hopefulness, growth and mystery that lie ahead for those who are willing.

To help me more fully express the feminine energy, I asked Charity Masters, aka Holon, to contribute a few sounds. (Charity is a powerful soundhealer and musician who released her 'Dream Awake' ep on AtmoWorks in 2008.) Matt Hiller, aka Ishq, makes an appearance on the intro of the very first track, as well. This album, whose title refers to the Egyptian sky goddess Nuit or Nut, is characterized by subdued melodies, drifting dreamworld keyboard textures, bells, gongs, voice, and sounds from Mother Earth Herself. The basic bones for the 4 tracks were captured in 2 late night improvisations, and then expanded upon and refined over the last year. Many of the tracks for this album were composed in the key of F, which is thought to be the key of the Heart Chakra. For those familiar with my releases, "Because We Were Once Covered In Gold," "Children of Alcyone," and "Bridge To Nowhere," this will be familiar ground.
