Interstitial - Temporal Arc

AtmoWorks is proud to offer the 2009 re-issue of Temporal Arc by Interstitial!

The creative voice of our very own John Koch-Northrup, Interstitial blurs the lines between ambient drone and IDM like few other electronic composers can. Temporal Arc is a sinuous journey through a ever-shifting realm of muted beats and endless drones. JKN had this to say about his 2001 release.

"Temporal Arc spans electronic ambient music with half the album squarely in ambient techno territory - heavy on the drums and atmospheres - and the other half exploring beatless drones, atmospheres, and soundscapes.

Temporal Arc was the debut album for John Koch-Northrup, releasing as Interstitial. It was released in 2001 on the New York based Red Antenna label. This new release adds an additional track not found on the original album. It also features beautiful mastering by MjDawn for the 2009 release. "

You can read more about John's thoughts and reminiscences about the album in his blog as well as in the store listing. We're thrilled to bring this most excellent music back into the public eye, and to finally have JKN among the stable of AtmoWorks recording artists!

Two full length tracks are in the music player on AtmoWorks.com - just click play below. The player is also always on the front page of the AtmoWorks site. You can also pop the music out of this page to keep it playing while you surf the web... it's the 2nd button from the right above "added by".

Also, here's the blog post that lists what I wrote about the album in 2001, what Red Antenna wrote, and several reviews from 2002:

Here's a little more on the album:

Temporal Arc spans electronic ambient music with half the album squarely in ambient techno territory - heavy on the drums and atmospheres - and the other half exploring beatless drones, atmospheres, and soundscapes.

Temporal Arc was the debut album for John Koch-Northrup, releasing as Interstitial. It was released in 2001 on the New York based Red Antenna label. This new release adds an additional track not found on the original album. It also features beautiful mastering by MjDawn for the 2009 release.

The album begins with "Frozen", hefty grooves served chilled under soundscapes of almost symphonically processed guitar. As the beats of "Frozen" fade, the micro-minimal melody and static architectural rhythms of "Movement in Glass" pulse slowly across the airwaves.

In a 2002 review, Shimone Samuel said: '"Bones of the Dead" is a very fitting title for the track. It isn't dark or morbid but rather serene and peaceful. Almost as if to say - it's alright, there's a better place.' In an odd twist, the name actually refers to an Italian Cookie recipe gleaned from a British TV Show. The dual meaning title fits perfectly.

In the very middle of the album is the added bonus track, "Marco Polo". This was originally released on the 2002 AtmoWorks "Portraits" compilation which asked each artist to do a self portrait in sound. A field recording of children playing the game Marco Polo outside in a hotel pool with the sounds of insects and traffic flows throughout the piece. Layers of moving synth lines and drones, industrial noise, and in the middle, stepping into a house to hear piano playing for a brief moment, before stepping out the backdoor into the night air again.

"Refraction" brings back densely processed beats. Koch-Northrup pulls heavily from his techno influences and layers in a floating tapestry of ambient chords and movement. As "Refraction" fades, the deep insistent drones of "Gnosio" begin to rise slowly from a windswept night.

The album ends with the title track, a darker atmosphere is interrupted by minimal techno beats peeking through the surface until finally breaking free for a few minutes to take center stage only to fall back beneath the breathing darkness to fade into nothing.

Temporal Arc is available in 320 kbps mp3 format with pdf artwork or as a CDR.
