"Temporal Arc" by Interstitial
Originally released in 2001, "Temporal Arc" by Interstitial is a great album that blends drones and percussive elements in a fluid and natural way, resulting in an engaging collection of music that still sounds fresh and vital now almost ten years later. John Koch Northrup of Interstitial has brought together sounds and tones in a skillful mix that pays equal attention to all of the elements in the soundfield, giving the listener something n…

Temporal Arc was originally released on the Red Antenna label in December 2001. Below are some descriptions and reviews from the original release. Thanks for reading!
Here's what I wrote about it back then:
Temporal Arc merges the processed pulse rhythms of Berlin and Detroit with atmospheric ambient and beatless minimalism. The title track encompasses all of these elements - drifting from dark atmospheric expansions into tightly compressed drums and back again. Some tracks use…

Let's start with the "I'm leaving AtmoWorks" part.
John, Matt and I have co-owned the label since March 2008 and it's been a very exciting time for me. However, we've decided to part ways. John and Matt will continue to own and run AtmoWorks and I'll be stepping out of the day to day operation of the label.
I've met so many great people through AtmoWorks - fellow musicians, fellow listeners, friends. I'll still be around the community and will always look forward to talking to everyone…

Hello, everyone! We've had a fantastic 2009 so far this year - and it just keeps getting better!
+++++ Recent releases +++++
:: Chris Russell - Aralu :: Brand new artist to AtmoWorks, a very ambient release. Chris describes Aralu as a lost Babylonian underworld - a vast, dark underground cave entered through a hole in the earth.
:: Steve Brand - Cahokia :: Originally self-released in 2007, Cahokia has been refined, reworked, and remastered. Steve has a deep connection with Cahokia - which was…

After multiple problems with pc's and both a laptop and desktop currently not working - we're considering getting an iMac. Does anyone have experience using an iMac as their main music computer? Am I going to be really ticked I didn't wait to get a Mac Pro (which will be a long wait!)
First issue I have is my Presonus Firestudio is firewire 400 - and the iMac is 800. Some searching shows an adapter will probably work - I'm still looking into that.
I plan to use Reaper as my main recording soft…

Mudvayne to perform at civic center Sunday
By Dru Willis (Contact)
Wednesday, March 18, 2009
Rock band Mudvayne's drummer Matt McDonough is a busy guy.
For the past 10 years, McDonough has dabbled in electronic music after a lifetime interest in the genre and finally released some electronic material.
It has been nice to see it all come to fruition, he said.
"So it's kind of exciting to see something a…

I found this interview with Matt recently - he talks about all things Mudvayne, growing up in central Illinois, as well as AtmoWorks, MjDawn, and miKroNaught.

Interview with Mudvayne
By JoeFabietz - March 5, 2009 - 2:19pm
The heavy metal quartet Mudvayne will be rocking the Shoreline Ballroom on Tuesday, March 10.
We sat down with Matthew McDonough, drummer from the band, during a recent interview. Here's the entire interview:

Are you interested in the platform that the AtmoWorks site is built on? There are roughly 900,000 networks built on Ning. We came here because of the ease of creating a community where you can basically "run the show" - you have your profile page - can upload your music, photos, post blogs, message each other.
There's chat - but we had it disabled due to bugs. They've rolled out a new version so we may try that again.
Anyway - if you belong to more than one Ning network - you may be interested…

*** An Anniversary!
We're quickly approaching the anniversary of the transition from the original AtmoWorks, founded in 2001 by John Strate-Hootman (Vir Unis) and James Johnson - to the change on March 1, 2008 when James stepped down and Matt McDonough and I joined as co-owners with John S-H. It's been an *amazing* first year. I'm thrilled to be working with John, Matt, Geoff, and Steve - and all the artists that we release. It's the people that make this all worthwhile to me.
We've h…

We're approaching
Thanksgiving in the U.S. this Thursday. My wife and I are taking a couple of days off before the holiday - so in all - we're off work from Tuesday through the weekend. Yeah! It's wonderful to have a bit of a break - and I plan to continue cleaning up my studio, de-cluttering, and making sure everything is plugged in and working. I hope to get my Mackie 1604 mixer ready to sell as well... time to downsize a bit - it's just too darn big in my small space. Thanksgiving is a…

Ok - so I finally sprung for a $7.00 copy of the dvd version of Spinal Tap to replace my aging VHS. I haven't seen it all the way through in years.
Wow. Could this movie have been any better? Anyone's that's ever played in a band - regardless of whether it ever got out of the garage - or into bars/colleges - or beyond can relate to at least several moments in this movie (if not the majority of it).
My favorite cringe scene is at the airforce base when the radio starts coming through his wirele…

I've been a member of the Ambient Mailing List on Hyperreal off and on over the last decade. There have been several surveys to pick the best ambient albums - usually where each voter selects their Top 10 albums. Below are the raw results from many of them which are very fun to read through.
You can see several of these in the "essential info" section of
Epsilon on Hyperreal - however, most of these are not published there.
I hope to start a 20…

Phonaut posted this to the 'event' I posted earlier... this has all the details for the show:
Tune in tomorrow evening for a truly monumental episode of forward thinking ambientechno. Joining us will be longtime Chicago area producer Vir Unis. He's done many live radio performances for us over the years, often in conjunction with longtime collaborator James Johnson, but this Friday's set promises to be a first since he will be performing as the Elf Machine this time around. As the first public…

Hopefully - you're finding our AtmoWorks site to be fun to visit and come back to. I know I do - and I'm having a ball helping build the site and make it as fun and useful as possible. There are three of us that "own" AtmoWorks (John/Vir Unis, Matt/MjDawn, and me/John/Relaxed Machiney) - but I probably work with the websites the most. Also helping build the site is Geoff / EndofLogic, our trusty Ning admin - he does so much behind the scenes he's almost part of the label. He's at least one of th…

I've been trying to exercise more - and to help with that I've started walking at work in the morning and afternoon when I'd normally take a break.
This morning's walk was interesting as a little rain storm was rolling in and sound always carries so interestingly when the clouds are low and the atmosphere seems to be holding everything down. The birds were particularly active - a couple of flocks were flitting this way and that like giant schools of fish in the sky - shifting and changing direc…

I'm "new" to owning Brian Eno and other classic essential ambient music. I've heard Eno on occassion - usually once or twice borrowed off of someone - but I've never sat down and absorbed it like I have so many albums. Since Eno is almost always referenced in ambient disucssions and as influences on my favorite artists - or direct comparisons - I'm thinking of adding some to my collection.
I found my way into this little pocket world of ambient via Japan / David Sylvian, all the wonderful backg…
