About Me:
Like many here, I've been playing/composing/'figuring out what this button does' for as long as I care to remember. Aside from music, I spent eight years studying cognition and the brain at a major research university in the US. I then decided to switch fields and became a tax lawyer. My experience as a research scientist opened me up to some incredible new ways of thinking about the world, particularly in the areas of complexity and emergent systems. I was then excited to see that artists like Brian Eno and Steve Reich had applied these concepts to music production/composition. After digging into the field, I came across Vir Unis' work along with many other notable ambient artists. I decided to cut the I-IV-V progressions and give generative music a whirl. So, that will be the focus of most my music here and I hope to learn from many of the other generative artists in the community.
Favorite artist(s)?
Eno, Daniel Lanois, Phillip Glass, Flood, Arvo Part, Steve Reich, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Orb, Orbital, Underworld, Vir Unis, James Johnson, Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Ian Boddy, Aes Dana, Carbon Based Lifeforms, and so on.
Are you a musician? What instrument do you play? Type of music?
Keyboards/softsynths/guitar. Generative music that usually results in Minimal Ambient/Pulse.
In case anybody wants to share production techniques, I primarily use Reason 4 (fed through Cubase for mastering), Sonic Charge MicroTonic VST Drum Machine and Native Instruments VSTs (Absynth, Massive, Kontakt, etc.).
This is great. Atmoworks is one of my favorite labels, featuring some of my favorite artists. Glad to see a community develop through the site. Look forward to reading about/chatting with you.
