About Me:
rabbit hole radio is atmoworks' weekly radio show. it takes place from 10pm-1am central standard time each thursday. if you'd like to tune in and/or chat with me then, please go to stillstream.com

Since leaving High School in 1976 I have always worked in this music world, pursued and realized things that some call dreams, and I live with the consequences of choices I've made.
Daily, the thought of living the day to day can appear quite trying at best.
I reckon it's a great idea to talk the time of day, and to help each other's dreams come to fruition.
Now, some history and a few highlights.
While still in high school in the mid 1970's, Dean experimented with tape manipulation, that included looping, splicing, field recordings, and processing them through effects that were available at the time...a crude form of what is now called sound design. This was also the time of his first review in "Rolling Stone" as a guitarist in 1976.
1976-79:
Straight from high school Dean managed an import record store that sold progressive rock, Krautrock and electronic music.
While working there he joined the band Whirlywirld playing guitar and effects releasing two E.P.'s "Window To The World" and "Eyebrows Still Shaved",
1979-82:
Dean formed a new band called "Equal Local", releasing two E.P.'s "Madagascar" and "Yank" as well as a compilation of live performances "How Did We Miss These".
Cannes Film Festival Award: 1981 Winner Best Short Film "Mass Movement"
Sydney Symphony Orchestra: Dance Production "Terra Sect" wrote and conducted.
The Fourth International Bienalle Audio: Wrote and Performed 2 compositions.
1982-85:
Director of Music - Party Architecure & Australian Fashion Design Council writing, performing and engineering many fashion shows including the haute couture designs of Vanessa Leyonhjelm in New York, Chicago and Dallas.
Formed a 23 piece big band, playing original compositions called "Hot Half Hour" released a 4 song E.P.
Assistant Director/Chief Engineer/Trainer for the Australian National Program Service (produced & engineered talk/news/music programs throughout Australian,Asian and American Public Radio Stations.
Recorded two Soundtracks "Run For Their Lives and "On The Brink" for the United Nations American Red Cross famine relief in Ethiopia.
Played guitar on the soundtrack "Dogs In Space" (Win/Lose and Rooms For The Memory) with Michael Hutchense.
Co wrote 3 songs for the Stephen Cummings release "This Wonderful Life"
Landed worldwide songwriting/publishing deals with Polygram and E.M.I. which included song submissions and recordings for the Eurythmics.
1985-97:
Department Director/Lecturer Of Songwriting - Australian College Of Entertainers. Wrote the syllabus.
Co- wrote songs on three more Stephen Cummings C.D.'s. "Lovetown", "A New Kind Of Blue" which received the A.R.I.A (Australian Record Industry Award), 1990 Winner Best Adult Rock. "Good Humour" receiving 1991 Winner Best Alternative Album.
1997-2007:
Worked with a Florida music store called Music Showcase as their District Music Education Sales Manager, which encompassed the Hillsborough,Pasco,Pinellas and Polk counties.
This position included public speaking engagements both motivational and for teaching recording techniques to students from the Elementary/(Primary) school level through to University graduates. This also meant liasing with the resource/law enforcement officers within each school.

I've lived and worked in the U.S. for the past 18 years, and have recently come back to Australia for family and for reasons that will reveal themselves to me over time.

Currently working on albums and releasing through www.atmoworks.com and Hypnos Records

"Disturbed Earth" is a part of the music that has no set genre...yet.

Thoughts on "Thoughts..."

Writing about this album takes me back to 1977, where I cut up my brother's bicycle with a hacksaw to create my version of windchimes/bell sounds. I drilled holes in each part of what was left of his bicycle, and hung them with fishing line on a home-made frame...hitting them and recording whatever sounded good.
I then recorded the sounds of the spokes of the wheels, from said bicycle, as I turned them with the pedal mechanism, using forks or other things that would make a curious sound.

My bro… Continue

The Hotel Story

Through the fogsmoke of southern humidity, I found and bought a little place amongst grandfather oaks that were covered with spanish moss and creepers in Zephyrhills, Florida, I called it my hotel. It was the place I became Disturbed Earth and put that name to the music I had been doing since the late 70's.

The place was only 680 square feet and Steve Brand's incredible cover has captured the room where I would sometimes sit and watch a late night movie on the television after coming home from… Continue

On The Eve..."The Rest Of Time" Steve Brand/Disturbed Earth

The tying of the three releases that Steve Brand and I did is so simple, they were all done in July/August 2008.

"Broken Gold" was from sign outside a pawn shop down the road a ways from where I was that offered money for "broken gold".
"Busy With Dreams" was Steve's title...it's the best!!!
"The Rest Of Time" says it all.

"The Rest Of Time" I feel, is a reflection, and at the same time, a knowing of how to wrap it up on this one...put that happy/sad/missing closure on all three releases, sprin… Continue

Ghosts Of Carthage

I have a fascination with Carthage, it's influence in ancient times and it's demise(being raised to the ground) on a number of occassions. Too much to talk about with on this subject, the music and the cover says what I wanted to say though.

This is a special album, in that I used primarily my binaural mics for the recordings, both live, and in my little makeshift studio(railway apartment) I had at that time in Zephyrhills, Florida. As it backed on to an alley, and several family homes, it was… Continue

"Busy With Dreams"...seconds have their moments...Steve Brand/Disturbed Earth

As the rudimentary elements of producing music of this kind, collaborating with another artist, and how it actually makes it onto cd are seldom explained, this is how these particular albums were recorded.

"Busy With Dreams" is the second of three albums all recorded within a three week period in August 2008 by Steve Brand and myself. The first, "Broken Gold" was released November 2008, and the third called "The Rest Of Time", is scheduled for later this year.

It felt right that we would do so… Continue

Hi Dean, I quite enjoyed the clip from First Day Unnamed. Great "shadow content", and an apt phrase for it. It somehow reminded me a bit of Well of Souls, the way it felt. Nice work as ever! And you lads have a knack for titles, that's always appreciated too. Cheers! Greg

Hi dean,

I got your "Islands" and "Dreamswept" CDs, both fine work, love your style ... The song titles on "Islands" actually reflect what they sound like.
I'll be checking out more of the "Disturbed Earth" music.

Keep up the great work!

Mike
