Full Name: Jonathan Hughes
Born: 1969
Hometown: Buffalo, New York (a city far less snowy and far more interesting than most people think)
Occupation: Graphic Designer (Jonathan designs all of his own artwork for his releases, and enjoys the visual creative process as much as he does the creation of the music itself.
In His Own Words
My musical career (aside from playing baritone horn in the school band) started when I was in 8th grade, and my brother's friend gave him a bass that I quickly took possession of and started learning bass
lines to Police songs. Then things got rolling when I eventually got a little casio keyboard, and a four track, and a drum machine, and one of my most prized possessions -- a red Roland SH-101 synthesizer (which I still own and use regularly).
Like most kids who were starting out in electronic music in the mid 1980s, I was into and influenced by Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, whatever Vince Clarke was doing, Blancmange, Gary Numan, early Human League, Heaven 17 -- basically anything from Europe that had a synthesizer featured at least somewhat prominently (that means A Flock of Seagulls, Thompson Twins, and Duran Duran, too). Records were cheap
then, which made it relatively easy for a high school student to buy the latest synth-pop from England. LPs were good, but you weren't going to find a 20 minute track named after a small German village, or a free flexi disc with conversation about Yuri Gagarin in an LP. The cool stuff was always on the EPs and the maxi singles -- and they were half the price, too. So I tended to be drawn to stuff that was not only outside the mainstream, but on the outer fringes of what was outside the mainstream.
I got slightly sidetracked from electronic music during college, focusing on playing jazz bass, and then moody alternative rock, but a few years later, I was back to focusing on electronic music. I like many types of music, and play bass on all types of music, but I love synthesizers, and sound design, so the majority of the music I've released combines those two things. I really like music that can't be easily categorized, so much of my music doesn't fall easily into the ambient category. I like adding rhythmic elements here and there, and am not interested in constraining my music to fit easily into any one category. I also like subtle details, tension, and things that may not fit into the standard definition of beauty. I think these things are evident on all my releases, and especially Circumflex.
