Note: There were roughly 50% fewer respondents to this survey than there were for the 2001 “Classic Ambient” survey, yet overall the results are remarkably similar. Only Hyperreal list members participated this time. Once again, Biosphere’s Substrata reigns victorious. Despite a few little surprises, such as Eno’s seminal On Land squeaking past Aphex Twin’s Saw II at the top of the survey and the inexplicable plummeting of Tetsu Inoue’s Ambiant Otaku (the disc only received two votes), most of the titles at the top are the usual classic ambient suspects.
