All I was referring to there was that you really can't legally snag a sample off of a cd or dvd and use it as your own or without permission. There's somewhat of a fine line there. Many artists are fine with things being remixed or used in various ways - most want credit.

On the other hand - if you setup a mic and recorded yourself playing zills or percussion - or whatever... or playing synths or drums or piano... or field recordings of bees in your backyard... you made those and therefore you by default have the copyright.

At least under US law... a creative thing is copyright to you at the moment of creation. (this has absolutely nothing to do with "registering" a copyright...)

Long and the sort of it is this... if it's your music or sounds... bingo! you're cool. If someone snags a drum groove from someone elses cd... it's technically not cool.

There's gray area all over this debate.

Yes, you can use Indaba. All of my music is copyrighted through my publishing co via BMI. As long as what you are sending is your own stuff, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

I looked at the space to send files, etc, but I am wondering why it has to be copywrited material? All our stuff is free, we are not "professional" musicans (nobody ever pays for us!) so is it okay to just send our stuff anyway?

I have an account at Indaba Music, which is indabamusic.com. It's a free to sign up and use, but if you pay them ten bucks a month you get 10 gb worth of storage. We could use Indaba to work on our group collaborations. You can send files and mixes back and forth and even have an online program to construct and mix. Check it out and give some feedback!

This sounds like an interesting and entertaining venture. I can contribute various forms of sonic mayhem. Cool!

Ok - it's taking more than a few days - but ftp will be working soon. We're migrating webhosts - once that's done than I'll create a language of forms area on our site that you can use to exchange files. jkn

We'll sort out ftp for sharing files in a few days... :)

I sent an email to Dean ~ regarding what specific things we should send...did you get it? I responded to your private email.

This sounds like fun. I can contribute pads/arps/drones/generative drum loops/etc. Let me know when we can start uploading/sharing files.
