What are the best music shops in Chicago for electronic guys like us? My wife and I are moving there later this year, so I may want to hold off on certain purchases until then (especially whatever groove-generating system I decide to get). Stuff is ridiculously more expensive here in Blame Canada...
Moving to Chicago? Welcome to the area... I live 3.5 hours south around Peoria and I used to drive up to Chicago for record shopping... but that's been so many years ago it's ridiculous. I'm sure most of the good places are shut down. Most of the good indie stuff isn't available in physical stores anymore anyway...
John / Vir Unis is the guy you want to talk to - since he lives there. :-)
When I lived in Chicago in the early 80s, the place to go was Wax Trax, off the Fullerton 'L' Stop near DePaul. I think they are long gone, though, since their label went belly up years ago.
Yeah - Wax Trax was the big draw for me in the 80's... Then in the 90's they closed that original main shop and opened up in a much smaller store up the road aways. There was another shop in the early 90's that was awesome - I think it's still there because I think I remember John (Vir) mentioning going there recently. It was up just off of Belmont - a lot of fun stuff up around there.
