Rest In Peace

I will be playing Vine, Bark & Spore sometime this week in his memory.

What happened? I can't find any news on it.

I saw this posted on the ambient list and at Hypnos - thanks for posting here as I hadn't had a chance to stop in yet and pass on the news. Always sad when someone passes away. He left some beautiful music for everyone.

This is terrible news. Jorge will be greatly missed. I had always hoped for a third suspended memories album.
El Costembre, Vine, Bark and Spore will be played in his honor.

Rest in peace Jorge.. You are gone but your music will never be forgotten.

Taking in "Vine, Bark Spore" right now, and will move onto Suspended Memories material next. Those of us who found Mr. Reye's work an inspiration will miss him, but I'm sure he'll continue to work with us from the other side....maybe more so.

Such sad news and a great loss to so many. I had the pleasure of spending a few days with Jorge back in May of 2000. Biff Johnson and I flew from Sacramento to Tucson to serve as roadies for Steve Roach's annual concert. The day we arrived Steve and Jorge were emerging from an all-nighter in the Timeroom. They had just recorded what was to become "Cave Dwellers" on "The Serpent's Liar" CD. They had been working that week on material for the "Vine ~ Bark & Spore" release as well as preparing for the show.
Jorge was an amazing spirit. I remember asking him if he worried about stepping on the clay whistles and flutes that were placed on the floor near his feet where he often danced. One of the little whistles was hundreds of years old. He said something like, "if it happens, it happens." He lived in the moment. A favorite memory is sitting in Steve's backyard having a tech meeting with Roger King regarding the show. We were all getting serious about the attention to detail when Jorge appeared with a bottle and shot glasses and proclaimed, "Now is the time for tequilla". Best wishes for your next journey, Jorge. Thank you for the blessing of your spirit and the gift of your artistry.
Peace, Kirk

Oh, Kirk...you've sparked a memory. When I was at SoundCurrent with Steve, we had several moments to ask him about various experiences he had over the years...which we did as often as possible. One that I really remember was his recollection of being at a Suspended Memories show in Mexico, and this particular show was being put on an a venue that was an old lava tube cave?! Imagine hearing "Curandera" or "Place Between" in a freakin' lava cave with Steve on keys, Mr. Reyes slapping away at a pot, and Suso Saiz's guitar textures echoing around the tubes. Man, I was there just hearing the description.

Another grey cell sparked. Probably shouldn't pass this on, but I will... About 4 years ago (when I was still pretty much doing experimental stuff), I had an EXTREMELY vivid dream in which I was sitting in the Sonoran desert with Steve and Jorge in a circle on a small rise. I was pounding away on a hollow log with smaller logs, Steve and Jorge were also playing percussion instruments, textures and drones drifted in from I don't know where. The wind was blowing and suspending the sand, there must've been high thin clouds because the sun was not at all intense, a fire was lit and flowed smoke and ashes across the circle and across our faces. We were in complete trance. I felt and feel now that this was their invitation to come be in the circle...and I am.
