We live and breathe music.

I started this for all the drummers to discuss here anything about percussion. Drums are the reason why I got into music at the age of 13 and haven't stopped since. Its always great to talk to other percussionists, share knowledge, and talk about your favorite drum Gods!

My favorite Ultimate drummer has always really been Dave Weckl from the Dave Weckl Band. Others close to heart have been KJ Sawka (Jungle drummer) and Chad Smith from the Chilis due to his influence he had on me in my teens as it helped me learn to keep a nice groove with detailed complexity...

...Not also forgetting one of the best Funk drummers to walk the planet - Derrick McKenzie! Jamiroquai's drummer.

Nice...I started playing drums around 12 years old. I started on pots and pans and tupperware, and then my ltitle brother got a purple Pearl drumkit! Roomate had a really big synsonic drumkit in my garage at 19 I used to play around on, and then I played in the church orchestra in my twenties...then was back-up drummer for my little brother's band when the drummer decided he wanted to play guitar. I never got good or fancy enough to perform anywhere (but I can certainly keep a beat!), but switched to congas, doumbek and zills later. Favorite drummers were always Neil Peart of Rush, John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, Ron Bushy of Iron Butterfly, Igor of Sepultura, Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden, Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac. I see Danny Carey is already mentioned & there's even a video!

Nice, that song sounds like Perfect Circle...or maybe Tool? Which band does he drum for?

Matt may get mad at me for bringing him up... but I'm not kidding when I say that watching him play drums is a jaw dropping experience. I've said that for years - long before Mudvayne... :) He's like a human drum machine - doing things with only 2 legs and 2 arms that only an octopus with exceptionally good timing should be able to pull off.

in that case, u will definately like John Blackwell @ drummerworld.com

He plays stupidly fast funk and Jazz while flipping his sticks!

...that reminds me, Thomas Lang can do that as well along with dynamics in his double kick playing. Hes more of a metal approach. Still, an acrobat-ninja-drummer that'll blow anyone away.

...not necessarily mad, but definitely embarassed ;) Thanks much for the kind props! I really put my heart into my playing and strive to discover new uncharted lands with every composition I explore. That's what it's really all about for me. I'm not so much interested in the instrument, as I am in discovering space. Whatever the medium might be. I approach composition like building robots or evoking angels. A song makes it's presence known.
In other news: check out Pat Mastelotto. He is the drummer for King Crimson. And one of my all time favorites. The latest King Crimson dvd's are mind-blowing!

I've always drummed, from tapping tables and driving my wife mad to drumming with a south american 'pan pipe' band, and doing long stints of drumming at workshops. Some friends and I bought this together recently

we are still getting to know her and 8 of us can fit round and drum at the same time.
Never been taught drumming, but was part of a very tight Samba band for a year and learnt a lot.

She was made by a guy in scotland who makes the drums for the Taiko group Mugenkyo - She is a work of art and a labour of love. The box it arrived in would have survived an earthquake and weighed more than twice the drum itself..... the previous drum we played was a Taos drum, but we only played her in the traditional manner (partly becuase it was owned by someone else, we looked after her between gigs).

With this drum we are in unknown territory and exploring different ways of playing her and seeing what sort of drumming she likes too. We now have a low stand that she sits on and the room just shakes, It's like being in a kiva.. We will have to travel to a bigger space soon, just to see what she sounds like and will be playing her in the open at a workshop soon.
