We live and breathe music.

I started this for all the drummers to discuss here anything about percussion. Drums are the reason why I got into music at the age of 13 and haven't stopped since. Its always great to talk to other percussionists, share knowledge, and talk about your favorite drum Gods!

My favorite Ultimate drummer has always really been Dave Weckl from the Dave Weckl Band. Others close to heart have been KJ Sawka (Jungle drummer) and Chad Smith from the Chilis due to his influence he had on me in my teens as it helped me learn to keep a nice groove with detailed complexity...

...Not also forgetting one of the best Funk drummers to walk the planet - Derrick McKenzie! Jamiroquai's drummer.

I want to share with everyone my favourite rudiment at the moment:

R L R R L L

Playing the right hand on the hi-hat and ghost notes on the snare makes a nice foundation to a Jazz groove.

I'd love to jump in on this one - but I'm not a drummer so don't really have the detailed knowledge on things... :) I tend to love simple drum beats and simple repetition. When I'm programming drums I tend to keep things very simple... I do tend to use a lot of 2 on 3 type of things. I guess I'm a little funky in the background. :)

I love RHCP - and Chad's drumming is always on target. That great mix of aggressive and funky.

Stewart Copeland of the Police is always fun to watch play.

Ginger Baker (Cream), John Bonham (Zep)...

whoever played drums in James Brown's band - and Parliament... and Motown records...

Ginger Baker and John Bonham! Great ones yes!

I know wot u mean by 2 on 3. The simplest polyrhythm, works all the time.

I'll have to investigate. I haven't of any of them apart from P.Collins and J.Bonham.

Anyone into Toto at all?

Jeff Porcaro is one fo the smoothest drummer to of walked the planet!

Tony Williams played on a lot of Blue Note jazz records in the 60's - he's playing on some of my favorite Herbie Hancock albums from that era. I have one (maybe two) of his solo albums (essentially the same group of people as on the Herbie albums... Ron Carter on bass, Wayne Shorter on sax, Herbie on piano...) All of those people continued on through the decades and are all amazing pretty much every time I hear them on various projects.

I have to admit - Toto is very smooth - but I don't really care for it much. I think it's just my memories of the 80's getting in the way... :)

Some great drumming 'performances' spring to mind:

Jerry Marotta | 'Peter Gabriel' (4)
Steve Jansen | Most Japan albums (especially 'Tin Drum')
Martin Atkins | Killing Joke 'Extremities, Dirt & Various Repressed Emotions'
Paul Ferguson | Killing Joke 'Fire Dances' - technically not great, but great energy nonetheless

Loads more, I'm sure.

I'm not a drummer (in that I've never been trained as one) but among other musicians, I've appreciated drummers.

One that I haven't seen mentioned here yet that I really admire is Marc Anderson. Marc might fall more into the realm of percussionist for purists, but you'll have to work that out for yourself. He's played with guitarist Steve Tibbetts since the early 80's. I've included a couple of links to videos of Tibbetts performing with Anderson (Steve's own page and YouTube).

Other imaginative drummers might be Jerome Deupree of Morphine, who uses a highly unusual kit, and Bob Bert from the early days of Sonic Youth, who literally used pots and pans.

I've been a drummer since I was 13 before I even touched a synthesizer (or knew what to do with it). I've been either tapping on homemade drums (out of phonebooks, pan lids, and paint buckets), acoustic kit, or some kind of electronic pad (first Mattel Synsonic drums) as long as I can remember. It simply runs in my head without a stop button....-:)

My percussive influences;

Roger Taylor (Duran Duran)
Steward Copeland
Neil Peart
David Van Tiegham
Mickey Hart
Terry Bozzio
Manu Katche

I have always loved Jaki Liebezeit from "Can". I think he kept better time than the early drum machines. An amazing player and the sound also engineered by Holger Czukay.
