The best ambient artists in the world that nobody has heard of...

I am only going to start a ball rolling, one that may well founder in the marsh where the scintillation of my imagination flourishes. As we all know, with the dramatic advances of communication and technology music has undergone huge transformations especially in acoustic quality and availability in a number of formats, and immediacy. Also there seems to be more of it than ever before, more choices of rhythm for the different moods of the day. In this flourishing new plethora of sound architecture I wonder sometimes if a flower of infinite beauty is passed unnoticed. Recently, for instance, I was loaned some CDs of New Zealander Andrew Forrest and was blown away by the perfection of sound tapestry this artist could weave. I am sure many of you have heard of Andrew (though his CD marketing is limited) but there must be many artists out there that are even less known and yet deserve to be known. Gulan from Latvia for instance? Discussions have already highlighted that wonderful artist from Australia called Ashera (Anthony Asher Wright) who is perhaps not that well known.

Thanks to Atmoworks and those individuals who have got this thing up and running, there is opportunity not only to listen and absorb a whole new constellation of sound but to invite in the best artists in the world that no one has ever heard of.

I like all your suggestions so far. Had difficulty on that Spiderrecords site tracking samples of Akumu but you can stream a number of their tracks with good quality on http://radio3.cbc.ca/ (and that is what I am doing right now!). I agree that Sylken is really beautiful stuff. Cheers

So glad to hear that you're liking Sylken, I can honestly say that all of his releases are wonderful. I would also recommend a side project that Eric Hopper is involved with called SADU where he collaborates with Anomalous Disturbances and URM. There's a low bit rate sample on the ping things site (96kbps), but I'm afraid I don't know if there are any other samples elsewhere.

You might also like The Circular Ruins and Numina if you don't already know them. If you need more info I'd be happy to share.

I meant to comment on this the first time around. We've got her B'day album - which grooves for most of it and only has a couple of not so good tunes - as well as Missy Elliot, a couple of Justin Timberlake albums, etc.... I was on a quest to find the newish Linkin Park album for my wife's birthday yesterday (but only found the censored version so bought her a fun book instead...).

Nothing wrong with non-ambient albums!

I like the second album, it's got some nice beats and a really full sound. I saw the tour for it and I was quite impressed by the show. Great performer, a really dynamic talent...

You're comment about non-ambient albums is very true and I try very hard to be as open to as many musical styles as I can be, and I actually just posted a blog inquiring about other people's other ...
