We live and breathe music.

I found an artist called Lustmord on myspace who at first did not seem too interesting but after I went back and had a good listen, his Black Stars Hang track caught my attention...Ive been mad on ambient for a year and a half now but haven't stumbled across Dark Ambient till i heard this guy. Sounds interesting but I know nothing of this genre...yet

All I know is a bit of his history of him from the interviews I read off his site @ lustmord.com

So...who can share with us all they now about Lustmord?

Pretty much exactly as it sounds. Very minimal drone-based ambient, but in positive (major) key. If you're not familiar with Amir, you should check his work out. He's incredibly diverse, and very good.

haha. Glad u dropped it here. What is drift-ambient?

Amir Baghiri - "Drifting" from his "Orbital Repose" CD. Simply beautiful, drift-ambient. This man is a genius.

Boy am I a dumbass...this was supposed to go on the Now Playing thread.

I forgot to add. U may want to look into the exact details. I dont know much on the "killer freq" phenomenon.

SAVO said:
Thanks Moody Steve. Interesting. Although Im sure 3-4Hz is way out of human hearing range being that the lowest is we can hear is usually 30Hz if im not mistaken (25ish if u are lucky).

7Hz is known as the killer frequency. The US military discovered that being exposed at 7Hz can apparently jellify the tissue your body is made from, turning u to liquid. So, getting passed that down to 3Hz must be a mission.

One of Lustmord's sonic tricks to induce fear and unease in his listeners is his use of sub-sonic frequencies. Something in our brains is wired to produce fear when we 'hear' pressure waves around 3-4 Hz. This phenomena was exploited by military organizations in World War II to turn away entire surges of foot soldiers...and it's been posited as an explanation for the 'Ghost Ship' phenomenon (the ship's oscillation produces 3-4 Hz standing waves, causing the entire crew to flee in terror and jump ship). Pretty cool stuff.

Yes, I'm aware that home loudspeakers/amplifiers are incapable of producing these low notes. Luckily, these low notes do have a characteristic way of modulating high frequencies, such that human ears can still 'discern' them even without properly hearing them.

And as long as we're all making recommendations, I'd recommend looking into Ionosphere and some of Robert Rich's dark solo stuff (Below Zero, Illumination, Somnium, others).

The killer frequency is very, if not at all similar to the killer joke, which was revealed on an episode of Monty Python. Much to the chagrin of the world's various miltary orgnizations.

It's interesting and uncanny that as I begin to record again...I had plans for dark ambient and looking at lower fequencies for this ...In my planning stages when I was taking notes at the library I began taking a cursory look at Infrasound used by elephants to communicate and will be looking into this as I expand ideas for this dark ambient project I am working on "Order ov thee Octopi".

Elephants communicate over long distances by producing and receiving low-frequency sound (infrasound), a sub-sonic rumbling, which can travel through the ground farther than sound travels through the air. This can be felt by the sensitive skin of an elephant's feet and trunk, which pick up the resonant vibrations much as the flat skin on the head of a drum. To listen attentively, every member of the herd will lift one foreleg from the ground, and face the source of the sound, or often lay its trunk on the ground. The lifting presumably increases the ground contact and sensitivity of the remaining legs. This ability is thought also to aid their navigation by use of external sources of infrasound. Discovery of this new aspect of elephant social communication and perception came with breakthroughs in audio technology, which can pick up frequencies outside the range of the human ear. Pioneering research in elephant infrasound communication was done by Katy Payne, of the Elephant Listening Project, and is detailed in her book Silent Thunder. Though this research is still in its infancy, it is helping to solve many mysteries, such as how elephants can find distant potential mates, and how social groups are able to coordinate their movements over extensive range. I find this all incredibly facinating and hope to read further on some of these ideas. I am also interested in "ultrasonics" also...Many grasshoppers produce ultrasonic mating calls (above the range of human hearing). In some species, the sounds may be as high as 100 kHz. (Human hearing extends to about 20 kHz.) The upper frequency limit in humans (approximately 20 kHz) is caused by the middle ear, which acts as a low-pass filter. Ultrasonic hearing can occur if ultrasound is fed directly into the skull bone and reaches the cochlea without passing through the middle ear. Carefully-designed scientific studies have been performed and confirmed what they call the hypersonic effect - that even without consciously hearing it, high-frequency sound can have a measurable effect on the mind. The hypersonic effect is a term coined to describe the phenomenon reported in some scientific studies, which demonstrate that although humans cannot consciously hear sounds at frequencies above [approximately] 20 kHz, the presence or absence of those frequencies has a measurable effect on their psychological reaction.

It is a fact in psychoacoustics that children can hear some high-pitched sounds that older adults cannot hear, because in humans the upper limit pitch of hearing tends to become lower with age. A cell phone company has used this to create ring signals supposedly only able to be heard by younger humans[4]; but many older people claim to be able to hear it, which is likely given the considerable variation of age-related deterioration in the upper hearing threshold.

Some animals – such as dogs, cats, dolphins, bats, and mice – have an upper frequency limit that is greater than that of the human ear and thus can hear ultrasound.

Also incredibly interested in expanding relationships between color and sound and the corresponding frequencies. There are charts which correlate what colors represent what musical notes/frequencies. psychoacoustics is a wide open field and has much insight to offer the musician/artist. LUSTMORD has definitely piqued my interest once again in these various subjects ...as well as this thread being highly informative.

ELF waves...anybody interested in some spooky potential of thought control and sound....check out this...here is an excerpt of the article, and I will provide the link to the rest.We are looking at the
Effects of 6-10 Hz ELF on Brain Waves.

There is evidence that ELF magnetic waves can affect brain waves. These set of experiments were designed to study the effects of ELF rotating magnetic fields on the brain.

The specific ELF frequencies I was interested in studying are 6-10 Hertz. These frequencies are the same as those produced by the human brain in the theta and alpha states. Generally, specific brain wave frequency ranges can be associated with mood or thought patterns. Frequencies below 8 Hertz are considered theta waves. While these seem to be some of the least understood frequencies, they also seem to be associated with creative, insightful thought. When an artist or scientist has the "aha" experience, there's a good chance he or she is in theta. Alpha frequencies are from 8 to 12 Hertz and are commonly associated with relaxed, meditative states. Most people are in an alpha state during the short time immediately before they fall asleep. Alpha waves are strongest during that twilight state when we're half asleep and half awake. Beta frequencies (above 12 Hertz) coincide with our most "awake" analytical thinking. If you are solving a math problem, you're brain is working at beta frequencies. Most of our waking hours as adults are spent in the beta state. http://www.raven1.net/elf.htm

As said in KID A by Radiohead..."Everything in it's Right place...at the right time!". Although the following may technically merit it's own thread(I intend to start one...I swear ..tommrow morning!)on music and healing...since we are discussing various effects of frequency/sound I decided to provide this from an article on The Healing Sounds of Jonathan Goldman.

The word Bija is Sanskrit for "seed." It is believed that the seven Bija are the orginal sounds from which the universe was created.According to Jonathan Goldman, the bijas should be chanted aloud in order to balance and align the chakras.Likewise,Shabd, which is Sanskrit for the "sound current",comes from a spiritual tradition in which listening to inner sounds brings one to enlightenment. So a practitioner of Shabd yoga, for instance, meditates upon these sounds to achieve union with the divine.

Sorry.....I take for granted that such concepts are well known since they are a part of my every day thought process and vocabulary. Yet my Dad taught Calculus for 38 years and if I asked him what a Chakra was he would not have the faintest clue really.

So let's start at the beginning.... here is more information than you or I will ever need...

It's not really that deep my good friend....it's still things that are expressable in words...it's still on a rather simplex level of comprehension. This is all good. Check into if you like. The world of Yoga can get very DARK too...You can perform Bhakti(devotional connection to an intelligence, godform,a scary monster...or interstellar supercreep!) So I'm not goin' fluffy on ya Jack!
Please feel free to ask to to explain my self constantly.I can be a very self absorbed person a good deal of the time.Yet I romantize my self as an antinomian,Misanthropian,Zos Kia Kultus,Illithid Mind flayer super species super creepies! Yet I am a Mad man...and completely delusional and to be take for an entertaining grain of salt(false humility will get you everywhere!)

Maybe not "deep" then but interesting in how this discussion that was originally about Lustmord has turned into something else entirely yet all related somewhere...

Yes...very interesting indeed! Yet that's what makes life tick for me! Sycronicity,serendipity,correlation...interrelation...What the listener makes out of music or a work of visual art as opposed to the creator...than who is creating? All of us on both ends. Artists make artists out of us all. Yes...everything above, below and in between...now that's the sailor's way!

ALAS the mighty name of LUSTMORD invokes many worlds. He is even well know amongst us Illithid sorcerers ov thee underdark! All hail LUSTMORD!(Few know that he is a prime channel for our beloved Ilsensine!!)
