Here is jam band Phish on David Letterman in 1996 performing the song that would open my ears to them (after years of pure hatred) with their song "Charactor Zero".
Never been a huge fan, though this song is better than most. I've always thought their reputation as a "great live band" was a little overstated. They're good, but not so darn amazing as all that.
Yeah, their merits of being a great live band lay more in their 'jamming' than anything else. Keyboardist Page McConnel is their often overlooked secret weapon, though not so much in this video.
My now classic theory on Phish fans is this. If they tell you to stay away from the studio albums and just listen to live bootlegs, well, stay away from them. The Phish studio albums are amazing, starting at Billy Breathes and ending with Farmhouse. Live bootlegs of most any band aren't interesting unless you were there anyway. Plus the albums have no jammy flab. (Which I must now start a side project called Jammy Flab)
